SVADHISTHANA - DAS SAKRALCHAKRA
Svadhisthana - the sacral chakra
In yoga culture, the energy centres in our body are called "chakras". There are seven of them along the spine. Through yoga, we can (re-)activate the energy flow of our chakras. Each chakra symbolizes an area of life and reflects lightness or heaviness in our relationships and everyday life. Based on our experiences and perceptions, we can conclude where energetic blockages are located and use our yoga practice to dissolve them.
The second chakra
The second of our seven chakras is the sacral chakra. It is also called the sexual chakra or, in Sanskrit, Svadhisthana which can be translated as "residence of the self". On a physical level, the sacral chakra is located about 10 centimetres below the navel. This is where the sacrum is located, from which the name sacral chakra is derived. On a symbolic level, Svadhisthana is the centre of our emotionality, our sensuality and our instincts. One of these basic instincts is the desire for sexuality. However, not just when it comes to the reproductive instinct, the sacral chakra symbolizes something creative - it also has an impact on our creativity. Behind every creative process stands the energy of the sacral chakra as a driving force.People whose sacral chakra is in balance feel comfortable with themselves and alive. They have no difficulties in opening up to others. This quality also helps them to enjoy their sexuality freely. They just go with to the flow, enjoy everything to the fullest, express themselves creatively and feel an overall great joy of life. On the other hand, psychological signs such as depression, a fear of change, sexual disorders or listlessness can indicate a blockage of the sacral chakra. What can you do to bring your sacral chakra back into balance?
How to activate your sakral chakra
Water is the element associated with Svadhisthana. Therefore, you can positively influence your second chakra by drinking enough water, swimming or walking along the shore. Also, flowing movements and everything that helps you to get into a flow state are good for your sacral chakra. The colour orange stands for joy, activity and vitality and it is assigned to Svadhisthana. You can positively influence your chakra by enjoying orange food or by surrounding yourself with this vibrant colour from time to time. How about some bright orange yoga clothing, for example?
In yoga, the sacral chakra is specifically addressed through the tension of the pelvic floor (Mula Bhanda). Asanas such as Trikonasana (triangle), Bhujangasana (cobra) or Paschimottanasana (protrusion) are also stimulating. Furthermore, hip openers and squatting positions have an activating effect on the energy of the sacral chakra. Trusting your intuition, expressing creativity and being open-minded when new things happen - all this can help to stimulate your sacral chakra and feel a greater joy of life - try it out!
